Pygmies Marginalised in Rwanda

I am sharing a short documentary video

The clan of pygmies in Rwanda called Abatwa were considered great hunters, potters, dancers and singers in the history of Rwanda but it is said that when the colony came the Pygmies were not recognized as a tribe. While others were taken into schools, the pygmies were considered bushmen and incapable of learning. But those pygmies are left alone by the rest of the society.

Cultural Background:
Similar to the Native Americans in the US or the Aborigines in Australia, Rwanda’s native people now live in close nit communities and face many challenges as the country around them continues to develop.

Making Paper – Agasozi Community Workshhop

The latest workshop  held in Red Rocks was more of practical nature. The aim  of this workshop was to teach children how to recycle old newspapers and other useless  paper, turning it into reusable material.

The process of making paper is easy and everybody can make it – if you want to try recycling old newspapers at home, see instructions here. We have used frame method. Since I always update you with pictures, here is how we did it.

If you are in Rwanda, feel free to stop by in our art center where you can join us in participating with my art workshops. If you are an artist, you are also welcome to share your skills with our children. They are eager to learn!
